Am 23. Juni 1948 flog der Amerikaner Jack Bennett eine Ladung Kartoffeln nach Berlin, Tempelhof. Zwei Tage später begann die Berliner Luftbrücke offiziell. Bis zum Mai 1949 wurde die von der Sowjetarmee eingeschlossene Stadt von den West-Allierten über die Luft versorgt. Der Berliner Bürgermeister Ernst Reuter hielt damals eine berühmte Rede. Er sagte: ”Ihr Völker der Welt, ihr Völker in Amerika, in England, in Frankreich, in Italien! Schaut auf diese Stadt und erkennt, daß ihr diese Stadt und dieses Volk nicht preisgeben dürft, nicht preisgeben könnt!" Der heutige Bürgermeister sagt sowas nicht. Das könnte er auch nicht.
60 years ago, on the 23rd of June 1948, the pilot Jack Bennett from the West Allied Forces flew a plane, loaded with potatoes, over to Berlin, Tempelhof. A few days ago the Sovjet Army had isolated the city of Berlin. Nothing could go in, nothing could go out. And what Jack Bennet started, the Berliner Luftbrücke, is how Berlin survived until May 1949: Planes, loaded with food and basic aid arrived hourly in Berlin Tempelhof. Ernst Reuter, mayor of Berlin said: ”Schaut auf diese Stadt”. Now. the current mayor of Berlin is determined to turn this airport into a museum. He thinks that's cool. He is wrong. So wrong.
